ELDER LOGAN CHASE VAN KATWYK
WEEK # 71
10/26/2015
Hey hey hey!!!
Well, my week pretty good! I first have to say that I finally made it through my last summer here in Texas. As for the hurricane I hope no one feared. Although it was considered "the biggest hurricane in the history of the world" and "a category 5", we barely got affected by it. The most we got was just super duper windy and rainy on Saturday. It was funny though because since Pulsipher and I are down for 10 miles a day just about, we're doing a lot of walking. Luckily, the rain and windy subsided enough to where we were able to be on foot.
Anyway, so first on Thursday, the GA came and so we all went down to McAllen to go see him. The GA was Elder Dube (I think that's how you spell it) and I learned quite a bit from that meeting. A lot of it was basically talking about how we can become more spiritual as a mission. Basically that we should fix our self and become converted before we fix others and convert others. And how to better us the Book Of Mormon when we teach and the power behind it. Then President got up and talked about the characteristics of David and basically the kind of person he was. With his faith, obedience and diligence to the commandments. But then how he sinned and basically it all went crashing down. Then he talked about how after the mission, we're always going to need to be protecting ourselves to not let Satan get that little window to go through. Wish I had my noted with me to write more about what was talked about because I don't remember too much. Don't really know too much of his responsibilities. He just said President Nelson came up to him and said "Hey, you're going to go the the McAllen Texas Mission to speak" haha
Sunday was probably one of the craziest Sundays ever. I found out Saturday that I was supposed to teach the lesson in Young Men's for the third hour and it was about "How We Can Ask Effective Questions When Teaching". How are you supposed to teach young men that....I had no idea! And I had no time to prepare a solid lesson because we were suuuuuuuper busy with meetings and such all day Saturday and then we weren't going to have studies in the morning before church because we had a meeting with the bishop at 6 in the morning. So I just planned really quick for the day and then planned my lesson in an hour. I've learned that the longer I've been out on my mission, the more tired I've gotten and so I woke up Sunday morning, and let's just say I fell asleep for a few minutes on accident during the leadership meeting in Bishops office. Ooops. BUT! Nonetheless, for the lesson the third hour, it was super nuts. The Primary had their program and so they were just watching a movie and they had the only good TV that was working. So I was all over the place trying to find an alternative to replace the TV and I went through so many of peoples computers. lol Since this world is becoming more technologically advanced, who needs a disc slot to play DVDs? Then I finally found a computer that took the DVD, and during the lesson the computer slept and I didn't have the password to turn it back on. So after all that I didn't even get to use the movie I was gonna have them watch. Long story short, it was a hard lesson to teach by myself (because Pulsipher was doing other responsibilities) and it probably didn't even go that well. But it's all good because it's over. At that same time, Juan was suppose to be baptized yesterday and aaaaallll last week we were trying to get in contact with him but, he doesn't have a car anymore, his phone doesn't take calls or texts, and he doesn't really live anywhere in specific. So Saturday we were hunting for him looking everywhere and finally it was just up to faith and prayers. We needed him so we could get the signature for his baptismal form but his parents are separated, One lives in Houston and the other lives in Mexico. We've been frantically trying to get the signature. He kept telling us all last week that he was going to get it because his Dad was going to come from Corpus. .....never came. So he came to church yesterday and we were trying to baptize him, filled the font and everything but the baptism didn't happen. He's going to get baptized on Thursday instead. I guess I'm good with that as well. So that's the story so far!
Well that's about my week so far. This transfer has gone by sooooo so fast. Keep on keepin on and I'm glad everything is everything. Love you all a lot and pray for you always. Have a great week!

WEEK #70
10/19/15
Hey howdy hey!
Well this week was pretty pretty good.
Tuesday was a lot of fun. As a District, we went to Wingstop for my birthday. The sisters in my District all gave me little presents with a card and such. One of the companionship even gave me silky, leopard bed sheets as a joke hahaha Then, after District Meeting, one of the other sisters made an ice cream cake for me and another Elder (because we share the same birthday). Then, we go an eat more at a members house after. Then, after that, a couple of the members hooked me up with a slurpee and a blizzard from DQ. I have never eaten so much sweets and foods like that in my life! haha but it was alot of fun. A LOT better than last years haha
On Wednesday, we had interviews with President and still, I'm baffled by how well the Spirit works through him. Hahah as me and President were walking to the room he asked "How much time do you have in your mission?" and I responded, "uhhhhhh just a little bit of time". and he laughed a little bit and then asked, "How much time". I proceded to respond to that question by saying almost 16 months. and his reaction was "wwooooooohh!!! The time goes by really fast Elder." I've honestly never seen him react so exaggerated like so it it caught me really off guard hahah. Anyways, so we sit down and start the interview and he asked me a few questions and then asked if there was anything I wanted to ask him that I need help with. So I responded yes and I asked him how I can have more confidence in myself because I felt like that was impeding me on progressing and improving. Without any thought just about, he knew exactly what to say and told me that my only problem is that I need to just act. Act whenever I get any thoughts to do anything go. He as well told me that I have alot of knowledge in my head but I just have to apply it in my heart as well and just act. He then gave me D&C 67 to read and that was it. Shortest interview on my mission that I've ever had hahah But it was definitely was I needed. Later, i found out how it applied.
So one Friday during Weekly Planning, Pulsipher and I had a little council about our area, which lasted about like an hour or so. and we basically just talked about the struggles that our area is having as well as the district. It was cool thought because, we had a moment, we were just told each other what we thought the other person can improve on. And as we were talking, we both received revelation which tied into our interviews that we had with President. Really cool connection. Because Pulsipher made a connection about how being a District Leader, you just have to learn to "act" and just trust in the spirit to know what to do at times. Little brush on the surface from the revelation but that was basically it.
In our area, we've been teaching two people that we're trying to baptize this month. A nine year old named Mia and a 16 year old named Juan. We've really been having trouble with both of them because 1) Mia's mom is a Less-Active member and she sometimes works on Sunday, and Mia doesn't wanna go to church without her family. And 2) Juan is in the process of moving out from his family. Basically living his life on his own right now but he's the boyfriend of a active member. It's been hard for us to get Mia to church and it's also been hard to help Juan have the desire. Apparently, he's been flaky before getting baptized. He just had been putting his priorities in the wrong places and is just not acting. BUT he did get interviewed yesterday and he should be getting baptized on sunday! Woop woop!
Lately, It's been really trying my patience when people say they want something, but they're not doing anything to get it. I went super hard on this one member on Saturday because she says that she really wants to go to the temple, and she's really trying to be a good girl, but she goes to clubs! I was just like "What!?" and I just laid it down for her (With love included. Don't worry I didn't come down on her to where she got her feelings hurt) But ya, I just got tired of it. So hopefully she'll be able to change and start coming back to church and doing something to prepare herself for the temple.
That was my week. We have a GA coming on thursday, and they're putting a big enphasis on being clean and organized. Maybe a 12? Who knows. I guess I'll let you guys know next week. But ya love you all and pray for you all. Hope everything continues to be everything and keep on keepin on. Have a great week!

WEEK #69
10/12/15
Hey all!
Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. We shall see how it goes tomorrow! :) Sorry about the email situation. I did send an email last week but I guess it didn't make it to you guys. I did get my new card mom :) Thanks for all the help :)
(i received logan's new bank card on Friday and activated it. when i pulled up the online checking i noticed there were 5 piddly charges to his account with a card ending in 4 numbers that were neither his old card or his new card. i raced to the bank with all logan's checkbook, old bank card number, new card etc......they told me that logan was issued a temp card and when i activated the new one i kicked the temp card out of the system. i had to race to fedex to overnight the card so that he'd receive it this morning before going shopping and getting caught with a temp card that no longer would work....geesh)
Yes, I went to Wells Fargo last week and they handed me a temporary card to be able to use until you received and activated my new card. First thing I did was go buy a new wallet. And now I do have just about everything. Just a few little things missing from the mission but that come eventually. But yes, I guess I wont really be done just yet until I get my new license hahah
HOLY COW NO WAY! Ben comes home on thursday!? Oh snap. Yup there it is hahah there's the start of all the returning missionaries. I believe Taren Scarpa should be coming home sometime as well too. Man that's crazy though.
Well nothing really happened too out of the ordinary this week so this will probably be a short email. Things in Brownsville are super good. The Spanish is coming along and it sure is super nice to be surrounded by it. HOPEFULLY, this will be my last area and I can finish 5 transfers here. The members and the ward here is super great! I love them all. They are all super good members and they know how to do their job. It makes it easier on our part because now we don't have to teach them about their calling and the things they have to do. We can just work with them to fulfill their vision of their callings and what they are trying to accomplish.
But ya there nothing really too much to report for this week. Just the same old same old. Pulsipher and I have been working a lot together with helping the district/sisters with their needs and the difficulties they've been having. I've definitely learned about being the Assistant District Leader. For sure
OH something that was pretty interesting was that we went to the Brownsville Zoo as a zone last week Monday hahah SO I have a bunch of pictures of animals on my camera.
Well, I've run out of things to say... haha sorry :/ BUT! next I'm sure I'll have more. I love you all and pray for you all. Keep on keepin on and have awesome week! Hope everything continues to be everything!

WEEK #68
10/5/15
Hey hey hey!
Salutations from the great Browntown! or a.k.a the "True" Texico :) First off, happy belated birthday ness! Hope you had a great one watching conference! :)
As for me in my world down under, Brownsville is suuuuuuuper awesome! I love it down here! I had quite a ton of experiences this past week that I'm excited to share. So I'll take some time writing....
To start, The Herreras are doing great! They came to Conference and they all enjoyed it. Last time we went over, they were asking about you guys so I showed my photo album to them and described to them who you guys were. On Friday, we had a zone meeting before we took care of our Weekly Planning. Our Zone Leaders, Elder Boyer and Elder Browning asked Pulsipher and I if we can reenact our "Wise Man Built His House Upon A Rock" lip-sync video that Pulsipher, Blackman, Ivey, and I made aaaalllll the way back in Laredo last year. During the meeting, we did our "musical number" on the stage wearing funky random clothes and lip singing the song hahah everyone in the zone loved it and videotaped it hahah.
After the meeting, Pulsipher and I grabbed a quick bite at Wendy's to tide us over until our meal appointment at 3pm. So, we ate, did Weekly Planning and left to head to the meal appointment. When we got there, I was still kinda full.... But I was like "Eh, I've done this a millions times. It'll be all good". So we go and we eat, sweet corn first. SO far so good. Then the member piles a HUGE plate of Mole (i was on the computer the same time as logan and asked for a quick definition of mole........mexican food that can consist of chocolate, peanut butter, animal crackers, chili, usually served with some kind of meat and rice) and rice, with bread and tortillas. As soon as I saw the plate I just about died inside. So I was eating the best I could and then I started eating slower... and slower... and slower.... to the point where I was just about picking off little crumbs sizes hahah Pulsipher and the members where waaaayyyy done before me. And then she brings out dessert...... I was almost throwing up from so much food while I was eating the Mole and rice! And then the members started making comments on how I'm eating so good because I'm eating slow and that they should've all eaten slow. (Even though I was only eating slow because I was suuuuuuuuuper full) And from my drink I was drinking soda (which I usually stay away from) So I was basically dying while eating.
Finally I just gave up because my eat-chew-drink method was starting to not work. Then I asked if I could just take the food home with me. Long story short, we leave the appointment and I did not feel good whatsoever and Pulsipher was just laughing at me. We get to the car and I told him "Elder, I need to throw up" and he just starts laughing and was asking if I'd be able to wait or throw up here in the bushes. Then I just told him, I need to go to the bathroom and I'm sure if I throw up I'm just gonna have somethin comin up out of all ends. So I just waited. Then we go to a members house and we just do a quick visit to invite her to General Conference and I ask to use her bathroom. I use her bathroom and then we finish the visit. Then I turned to Pulsipher and I'm like "Elder I'm just gonna go throw-up" And he just laughs and says ok hahah SO I go over to the corner of the apartment complex that we were at, behind the fence away from the cars, bend over and I just throw-up aaaallll the food onto the grass. First time ever that I have thrown up from eating soooooo much food. BUT, I did feel better afterwards so that's what counts right? hahaha :) Pulsipher said he felt privileged and honored that he was able to be a witness.
General Conference was great! There were so many greats talks that it's hard to be able to choose one and write about em. But because of the talk from Holland, I do wanna give a shout out to you mom! You're the greatest and I love you a lot. IT was a great experience though watching because something that we were teaching the people wherever we went is to go to General Conference with a question or questions. So decided to take that challenge as well because never in my life have I gone to General Conference with questions. Every. Single. One of my questions were answered which probably was one of the coolest experiences I've had. There are so many members of the church, so many topics to be able to choose from that they could speak on, but yet, they were able to answer questions that I came up with the night before or morning of. Pretty cool!
Well that is all I have for this week. Hope everything continues to be everything and keep on keepin on! Love you all and pray for you all. Have a steller week!
