WEEK #84
1/25/16
Hey hey hey!
Sooooo.... Amanda got baptized today!!!! Wait..... yesterday!!!! hahah It was very good. Very smooth with little or no problems at all. Amanda is a very awesome girl. She's 18 years old and her Dad owns like 5 ranches in total. He's super awesome.
So this is a cool story... Tthe other day, Amanda was like "I wanna tell you my testimony the next time you come over". The next time we went over, she told us. It was very special. She told us that in her life she was felt alone. She always felt like she would be serving others and helping out her family but no body was recognizing her for what she was doing. She felt pretty separated from her family in her relationships. And then as well during those times, she was going to several other different churches trying to figure out which one she best connected with. Overall she just felt something missing in her life and she just wasn't happy and was wondering if God was really there... She started praying and I quote, "I was praying and I asked God to show me a sign. To send me a sign for someone or something to guide me to feel closer." Then the next day or so, we knocked on the door of the house that she was at (she was at her sister-in-laws house when we found her), and when we knocked, everyone who was there wanted us to go away and they were in the house brainstorming for an excuse to give us so we'd go away. The one they decided to tell us was that they were "heading to McAllen". Amanda came to the door to tell us and started talking with us. Then she sat down with us outside and she told us that she ended up being interested in what we had to say and she felt like this is what she was looking for.
What was super cool and definitely a testimony builder to me was the other side of the story. Our story and side of the experience....... One day Elder Alonso and I decided to go try to find this member or somebody that apparently lives around in the area she lives at. We went by the house and no one was there so our back-up plan was knocking on doors to start some work in that area. So we started walking.... and we came up this street and as we were walking Elder Alonso asks me, "What's the spirit telling you?" And I stopped and looked... and I looked at this one house and I just sad "this one." We started walking towards it. We knocked. Waited there for a while because no one wanted to open the door and eventually Amanda came out of the house and we started talking with her. And now we're here! It pretty cool how the Lord works and uses us to find the people that he needs and those who are prepared. As for the next question, I did the baptism :)
Janell's friend Myrah is still around. She doesn't really come to church or the activities anymore but we see her occasionally.
As for the successes as a ZL, My companion E. Faris and I held a Zone Meeting and we talked about our motto from my favorite movie Drumline ;) "One Band, One Sound." It was basically about working unified as missionaries as well being unified with our members that we are working with. I thought it went very well! We also had other training by our DL's we assigned. E. Madsen gave the training "Being bold but not overbearing" And then the other DL, E. Jensen talked about "working with members". Then we also had the Sisters give a training about "being Bold with Love" And they gave us a commitment to compare Jack And The Beanstalk to the Gospel hahah. It was very, very good.
As a DL, my district had a baptism and confirmation last week :) E. Madsen and Monnett baptized someone who had been investigating the church since last year. But she turned 18 on Thursday and so she was able to be baptized. And then Us with Amanda :) So as for a District, we're almost hitting our baptism goal for this month.
In Mission Zone there are 5 districts.
The last time, Elder Alonso and I laughed was this morning aaaaand I can't remember why. We usually just make jokes about random things hahah. I think what makes me laugh in my area is the amount of pregnant stray dogs in our area that roam around hahah it's pretty funny.
Hmmmmm how I stay upbeat.... Well, I just make the choice :) There nothing to really be negative about when you're doing the work of the Lord and serving others. I always just tell myself "It's ok! I'm gonna have a great attitude. Cuz It's gonna be a great day!" And I just say that as enthusiastically as I can. And it works! haha
For my hero, I would probably say my Zone Leaders. They've helped me out a lot with the problems that I have in my district by giving me council and being inspired to help me out and make sure I'm getting things done.
I'll be honest, the Scripture study was very minimal this week because all week I've been making plans for the next transfer in case I'm leaving, my district in case I'm staying, myself, things that need to happen etc. so I haven't really been able to read a whole lot :/
My favorite teaching moment would probably when I compared Jack And The Beanstalk to the gospel. It was a contact and I had a couple of little beans and she was talking about how she wanted to be clean of all her sins and start over. We started talking about baptism and I used the little story and compared it to how Jack needed to do the action himself to climb up the Beanstalk with that goal in mind to get to the Giant's house (baptism). Then I invited her to be baptized and her response, "ehhhhhh no...". Shut down super hard hahah. I laughed it off but I was pretty proud of myself for winging that.
Well that is all I have for this week. Stay tuned to finding out where I'll be at!
Love you all and pray for you all.
Have a great week and keep on keepin on!

WEEK #83
1/18/17
Hey hey hey!
Good luck with the interview Rustin! I enjoyed reading the comments about families. And it is true, a lot of times you just have to keep he faith and hold out to the very end. Sister Chavez is a great women, every time we go over she always asks "Ya comieron?" (You guys eat already?) Regardless of what happens she's always willing to feed us. We're really trying to work with her to help building her up and increasing her testimony and such. We go by quite a bit so we have a god relationship with them.
As for my week... on Tuesday we started a zone exchange. And I was working in my area with Elder Hurst who is a transfer behind me. We had a lot of fun. We've known each other for quite sometime because we swapped places when I got transferred from Laredo to San Benito so we were able to connect that way and talk about the members and coverts there. It was a lot of fun and we found some people cool people! One of them is named Gloria and she's a single mom who lives alone with 3 or 4 kids or so. Then her neighbor who just has a lot of questions and wants to belong to something. See we shall see where they go.
So within our zone, we're doing something new....My zone, the Mission zone, is one of the biggest zone in the mission because a transfers ago another zone got closed down and added to Mission Zone. Supposedly, the reason for that was to increase the effectiveness of the zone and to help build up the mission. Now, as before, we aren't working like we're two zones combined. We're still getting the same results as a regular zone, which should not be happening. So the Zone Leaders came up with an idea and now we have "branched away from the mission" and we're called the "Texas Mission Mission"! Our ZL's Elder Lindsey and Velez are the "APs" and they called all of us DL's to be the ZL's so, in other words, I'm a "Zone Leader" (a pretend one) as of right now. And we basically put the mission organization in our zone. Basically our district is now half a zone and the other half is the La Joya district. And so ya! So I'm a ZL and my ZL companion is the DL over in La Joya. Elder Madsen (from my district) is the "DL" in this District now. Suuuuuper confusing probably! hahah It honestly was super confusing when they brought up the idea. But ya it's going pretty well! We're going to have a Zone Meeting tomorrow and stuff like that :)
As for investigators, our investigator Amanda is getting baptized this Sunday!!! Woop woop! She's super great. She's Janell's childhood best friend and she's been progressing very, very well. We're all super excited for her to be baptized. So, expect pictures next week! :)
I do wanna say that my favorite teaching moment was yesterday with Amanda. What I like to do when my investigators are about to be baptized is I like to do a lesson of 'warning'. I tell them that Satan will do everything he can to distract them from being baptized. I shared the scripture in Luke 20 about how Satan will sift you as a field of wheat. But then we read Helaman 10:4-5 and I had her replace the name Nephi with her name. It was very cool because the spirit was strong. She was crying and everything. But she is super, super excited to be baptized. She also shared her testimony with us yesterday telling her whole back story and how she was praying to find a church and then we came knocking :)
Well that is all I have for this week! I love you all and pray for you all. Keep on keeping on and I hope everything is everything. Have an awesome week!

WEEK #82
1/11/16
Hey hey hey!
Well this week was awesome! We've been having so much success as a district and area! :)
I guess to start, Wednesday we had interviews with President and mine went really well. It was interesting though because the council he told me was the same that my Zone Leaders have been talking to me about and what I've already been trying to fix. But it was good though. My problem was that I have a tendency to when I see something happen, I wait it out kinda thing, I have a habit or not correcting as quickly as I should I guess because of my "chill" personality. But, I feel like it's definitely gotten better though.... I hope haha But ya and he gave me Nephi 16 to read and study and learn the actions of Nephi. As for the rest of my district...... well.... lets just say they've had better interviews with President. And I'll just leave it at that.
This week, us as District did super super well!! We almost hit all of our goals and Rio and Las Lomas Elders we're doing super super good as well. Definitely worked super hard together!
Ummmm well that's honestly about it for this week. Nothing too spectacular happened this past week.
As for my hero, I think my hero would be one of my members, Sister Chavez. She's tryin to juggle raising 7 kids who are ALL rebellious and she's trying super hard to have a testimony and help her kids in the church. But because they're older, they just do their own thing and don't wanna do anything. So it's cool to see her efforts in trying to do the best thing for them.
Well that is about all I have for this week! I love you all and pray for you all. Keep on keepin on and I hope everything continues to be everything! Have an awesome week!

WEEK #81
1/4/2016
Hey Tanner!
It was nice talking to you too. You're getting waaayyyy too big! Haha have fun at school though. You're in the 6th grade? Time is flying. I'm doing good! And of course! I'm always having a good time :) The mission is the bomb! It's been a little chilly here too but it's been a little warmer. Hahah Don't worry Tanner when I get back we will game it up super hard ;) Make a little pile of games that we need to play together and we'll play em all. We'll stay up and play em ;) If mom allows... hahah I saw this cool game that looks fun. I dont know if you have it but it's called Minecraft Story World or something like that and it looked pretty fun. Kinda of reminded me on Lego Batman 2 with the Joker and how they all talk and stuff. Maybe we can work on that platinum ;) Have a good week ! Well love ya alot!
Hey hey!
Man everybody is getting sick! :/ That's not good! Not much really happened this week either. For New Years we drove down to Mission and hung out as a Zone and watched Polar Express. Couldn't see all of it because we all live the farthest away so we had to be home on time. But it was fun.
This week I've been having a big focus on helping out the Rio elders, Elder Birrell and Juarez. And I continue to have good spiritual experiences of listening to the spirit. The beginning of last week, I had the thought to have a comp study or interviews with them on Saturday so I wrote it down in my planner. Then it came close to Saturday, and I was realizing, "Wait... what am I gonna talk about with them?" But I still kept the idea to do it. On Saturday, I had an exchange with E. Juarez and we came to my area. So I was talking with him and I started getting some ideas of what I wanted to talk about during this comp study with them on Saturday. So I planned it all out and everything and I went and had the little meeting with them. I ended up figuring out the real reason why their numbers were so low and it was because they plan first and then set goals. So I used that as a teaching opportunity to teach them on how in their missions, they will ALWAYS heare "Set goals, make plans", In that order. Never switched. And it's when we set our goals first and we make the plans according to those goals, that's how we'll see success. It ended up being a very good comp study and I feel like it helped them out. They did super good on Saturday and Sunday so I'm super excited :) I expressed to them that one of my transfers goals is to see them consistently hitting all their goals, so we'll see what happens! :)
On Tuesday, we had a good District Meeting. It was another experience of listening to the spirit and being humble enough for the spirit to lead the training and the meeting. My training that I was going to give was about having charity and forgetting ourselves in the work. But, we just ended up talking about listening to the spirit and being humble to accept the will of God in our own works. It was very good and they all had good insights. We talked about how a lot of times, in the mission, we hear the quote that President always says; "There are a million ways to climb the mountain.... pick one". And we compared that to how a lot of times we try to make our own route as missionaries. Heavenly Father has a path already set for us but we tend to rely on our own strengths and we start creating our own path and start cutting bushes, trees, climbing over swamps, fighting off animals etc. But we have to trust that Heavenly Fathers path is better because then we wont ever have to back track and in reality, his way is easier than our way. It was a very good meeting.
On Tuesday as well, I had a two-day exchange with E. Madsen because he previously expressed to me that he wanted to talk with me one-on-one about something personal. So instead of planning interviews or a comp study, I planned for this exchange. Before the exchange, I studied about him. I wrote all of the problems I saw in him on a piece of paper and I made little actions plans on how I wanted to fix them. Something I wrote on that really stood out to me was, "Needs conversion". So then I started studying about that and reading in Preach My Gospel about the role of the Spirit in Conversion and I read a few scriptures about it. Then we had the exchange and Madsen and I started talking what was going on. I don't want to say specifically what was the problem but we started talking about it. And it was super cool because as we were talking about it, we had to stop to get ready for bed. So I used that time to pray about it. I grabbed one of my sticky note pads and a pencil and I just wrote down whatever came to my mind. I wrote three questions to ask him. And after I finished my prayer, we started talking about it more and I started asking the questions I wrote down. It was pretty cool on how everything fell into place and how the spirit was able to help me out with those three questions I wrote down. Pretty good week! :)
Well that's about it for my week! I love you all a lot and pray for you all. Keep on keepin' on and I hope everything is everything!
OH and I forgot... My hero for this week.... Hmmmmm that's honestly super hard because no body really has stuck out to me or done anything amazing. At least thats what I think when I think of the word "Hero". Buuuut, I dunno, I admire President Maluenda a lot. He just has such great gifts and is just a super awesome guy that has helped me a lot throughout my mission. It's just super hard to describe but he's just a super fun guy but is super in tune with the spirit. I dunno how to describe it hahah

It's just super hard to describe but he's just a super fun guy but is super in tune with the spirit. I dunno how to describe it hahah
